01Flanders and Wallonia
Two herds, two sets of habits.
Flanders
Most of the Belgian dairy herd, with fewer suckler cows each year. Systems in Dutch with Flemish terms, working with DGZ for animal health.
Wallonia
Suckler herds and the Belgian Blue, a large share of the Walloon herd. Systems in French and, for East Belgium, German, working with ARSIA for animal health.
02The rules our systems speak
Registered, inspected, moved.
- Sanitel
- The national register for bovine identification and movement. Calves are registered within 7 days of birth; movements are reported on time.
- Two ear tags
- EU rules require two ear tags per bovine (Reg. (EU) 2019/2035). An electronic identifier may replace one where national rules allow.
- FAVV / AFSCA
- The federal food safety agency, responsible for animal health rules and inspections.
- DGZ and ARSIA
- The animal health services for Flanders and for Wallonia, including disease programs and herd status.
- TRACES
- The EU system for health certificates on movements between member states.
- Bluetongue
- Disease pressure and vaccination status are part of every EU movement decision. Records keep them on the animal.
A Sanitel connection is planned, not yet available. See Integrations for status.
